Spur of the Moment Advent Wreath

Yesterday was the first Sunday of Advent. At worship we lit the first candle of the season -- hope or promise. Our minister encouraged us all to do something in our homes to keep the advent season alive all week long. I went home and began looking for a way to make a quick and easy advent wreath. I had plenty of candles, and I needed to make a run to Target, so off daughter and I headed.

I needed 3 more taper holders and something for the wreath. We found 3 clear holders (I already had 2 ceramic holders at home). I was determined to not over think this, but rather focus on the benefit of having a visual representation for the coming weeks. We wandered into the holiday decor section and began looking at wreaths that I could set the candles in. I saw one that was grape vine and cranberries, and of course lots of greenery wreaths, but as I rounded a corner I saw a star that had lights all over it. Obviously intended to hang, I immediately envisioned it on my dining room table, lights glowing with the candles arranged inside the star. Perfect.

So here's my rendition of an advent wreath --

It was important to me to keep my cost low and use things I had at home to remind myself of the purpose of the tradition -- to refocus away from consumerism and back on the promise of the season, the birth of God incarnate.

Blessings of the season to all of you.

  1. What a pretty Advent wreath! I love the star shape, especially with all the lights!
